Modern Foreign Languages

In this section, the Modern Foreign Languages department provides an overview of the KS3 curriculum and resources to aid revision and support progress.

Purpose of Study

The purpose of studying Modern Foreign Languages is to open up students to other cultures and foster their curiosity about the world. It helps them express their ideas and thoughts in another language and understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and writing. It also provides opportunities for practical communication, learning new ways of thinking, and reading great literature in the original language. Language teaching lays the foundation for learning further languages, equipping students to study and work in other countries.

What Makes Modern Foreign Languages at TWA Special?

The unique selling point of the Modern Foreign Languages department at The Wisbech Academy (TWA) is its commitment to providing a high-quality language education that fosters pupils' curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. TWA offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes a variety of authentic sources and opportunities for students to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking, and read great literature in the original language.

Aims of the curriculum

The aims of the subject are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Write at varying lengths, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
Year 7 Curriculum

All students on entry in year 7 study French and are now expected to do so up to GCSE level. All students are assessed in listening, reading, writing and speaking skills throughout the 5 years course according to the MFL thresholds.
