Bryony Smith - Head of Humanities

Bryony Smith is excited to join The Wisbech Academy as Head of Humanities. With several years of teaching experience in New Zealand, Bryony brings a strong background in curriculum leadership and a passion for fostering student success across English and the Humanities. She holds a BA from Auckland University, a teaching diploma from AUT, and is submitting her master's thesis in education this year, which is focused on reading comprehension and self-efficacy.

Bryony was drawn to the opportunity to lead a department and contribute to the development of a dynamic curriculum that engages students with the stories, cultures, and connections that make the Humanities such a vital subject. At TWA, a school with a strong STEM focus, she is particularly excited to explore how the Humanities can complement and enrich the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, fostering interdisciplinary connections that prepare students for an increasingly complex world. She is inspired by the chance to help shape empathetic, informed global citizens who can navigate and contribute to an increasingly complex world. For Bryony, creating an inclusive learning environment where students feel inspired to explore and aim high is essential.

What excites Bryony most as an educator is fostering curiosity and a sense of wonder in her students. She loves guiding them through the connections between history, literature, landscapes, and contemporary issues, helping them see the relevance of the Humanities in their own lives. Beyond the classroom, she encourages students to delve deeper into the Humanities through activities like debate, creative writing, and cultural events, ensuring opportunities for both academic and personal growth whilst maintaining high expectations.

Before joining TWA, Bryony led professional development in literacy and worked on innovative curriculum design to ensure all students could access and excel in their learning. She is also passionate about building strong partnerships with parents and the wider community. At TWA, she looks forward to collaborating closely with families to create a supportive and positive environment for students to thrive.

It’s an exciting time to be part of The Wisbech Academy, and Bryony is delighted to bring her energy and expertise to the team as she helps inspire the next generation to see the Humanities as a pathway to understanding and shaping the world around them.
